1,3-Butanediol (also known as butylene glycol) is a solvent for flavoring agents. It is an organic alcohol. It is commonly used as a solvent for food flavoring agents and is a comonomer used in certain polyurethane and polyester resins. In biology, 1,3-butanediol is used as a hypoglycemic agent. 1,3-butanediol is found in the pepper c. annuum. 1,3-butanediol can be used as intermediate for synthesizing products as azetidinone derivatives, an intermediate for production of antibiotics, pheromones, fragrances and insecticides. It is used as a wetting agent for regenerated cellulose film and tobacco.
