It is commonly used as a flavor agent intended for human consumption. It is commercially utilized as a solvent, for organic synthesis (introduction of active amyl group), in lubricants, in plasticizers, additives for oils and paints, and as a frothing agent in ore flotation. This compound has a distinctive scent, which is believed to play a key role in its effectiveness as an attractant for hornets and certain wasps, such as yellowjackets. Additionally, 2-methyl-1-butanol is registered as a biochemical pesticide.
