Acipimox is a niacin derivative and nicotinic acid analog with activity as a hypolipidemic agent. It is indicated as alternative or adjunct treatment to reduce triglyceride levels in patients who have not responded adequately to other treatments (such as statin or fibrate treatment) for hypertriglyceridemia (Fredrickson type IV hyperlipoproteinemia), hypercholesterolemia, and hypertriglyceridemia (Fredrickson type IIB hyperlipoproteinemia). Acipimox has been available in Europe since 1984.
