Adonitol is a pentitol (five-carbon sugar alcohol) having a meso-configuration, being derived from ribose by reduction of the carbonyl group. It occurs naturally in the plant Adonis vernalis and is also known as ribitol or D-ribose. Information on adonitol is very limited. Adonitol and xylitol have some small differences when compared in terms of their metabolism in the human body, but they are very similar when compared in terms of their pharmacokinetics regarding the enzyme activity.
