Aluminum distearate is a metallic aluminum salt of stearic acid. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as dicarboxylic acids and derivatives. These are organic compounds containing exactly two carboxylic acid groups. Aluminum distearate is used in cosmetic formulations principally for its lubricating properties and for its water repellent and adhesive characteristics. It is used in toilet preparations as an emulsifier of water-in-oil and as an agent to increase the viscosity of oils. This compound forms a “medium” gel in oils.
