Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that also exhibits a sedative property. Its mechanism of action in humans is not known. It promotes neuronal activity by blocking the membrane pump mechanism which is responsible for the absorption of serotonin and norepinephrine in serotonergic and adrenergic neurons.
