Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to alternate CAS RN 54450-56-5. Ammonium chloride is indicated for use in the treatment of low chloride levels in the blood, to treat metabolic alkalosis, and as an expectorant in cough syrups. Other indicated uses are as a flavor enhancer, dough strengthener, leavening agent, and as an acidifying agent. Ammonium chloride increases acidity by increasing the amount of hydrogen ion concentrations. This increase in ionization also reduces renal tubular reabsorption, allowing for increased urinary excretion. When used as an expectorant, ammonium chloride irritates the bronchial mucosa causing the production of excess respiratory tract fluid making it easier to generate a productive cough.
Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.
OEL Fastrac monographs are a cost-effective and convenient way to meet the requirements for PDEs (ADEs) contained in the EMA Guideline on setting health based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities (EMA/CHMP/CVMP/SWP/169430/2012), as well as PIC/S and ANVISA requirements, and to obtain the following information:
