Anagrelide hydrochloride is used reduce platelet counts (cell that help form blood clots) in cases of thrombocythemia (high numbers of platelets), cancers of the bone marrow, and other diseases where there is an increased risk for blood clots. The mechanism by which anagrelide reduces platelet counts is not clear. It appears to alter cell signals which reduce the production and/or slow the development of the precursor cells (megakaryocytes) which will become platelets.
