Angiotensin II is a vasoconstrictor indicated for increasing blood pressure in adults with septic or other distributive shock. Angiotensin II is part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAAS) system. It raises blood pressure by vasoconstriction, increases aldosterone release from the adrenal glands and sodium and water reabsorption from the proximal tubular cells, and increases vasopressin secretion. Direct action of angiotensin II on the vessel wall is mediated by binding of the G-protein-coupled angiotensin II receptor type 1 on vascular smooth muscle cells.
