Asenapine is an antipsychotic agent indicated to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, schizoaffective disorders, and manic disorders. The exact mechanism by which asenapine exerts its antipsychotic effect is unknown; however, its effect on schizophrenia may be mediated through a combination of antagonist activity at the dopamine (D2) and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. It has no appreciable affinity for muscarinic cholinergic receptors.
