Barium sulfate is a salt of the alkaline earth metal barium (Ba). Barium sulfate is the most common barium salt found in earth's crust and is found in limestone (barite), shales, and rocky sediments. The major use of barium sulfate is in the oil and gas industry to make lubricant muds for drilling.
