Basil oi is extracted from the herb Ocimum basilicum L., known in English as basil and also referred to as sweet basil. The dominant volatile components of basil are linalool, methyl chavicol (estragole), and eugenol, with mean contents of 25% to 36%, 24% to 70%, and 0.2% to 5%, respectively. It has been reported that important basil oil components are terpenes, phenylpropanoids, alcohols, and aldehydes. Basil oil composition is influenced by location, growing conditions, cultivars, different agronomic management, seasonal variation, and harvesting, drying, and processing methods.
