Benazepril is a carboxyl-containing angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor with antihypertensive activity. Upon cleavage of its ester group by the liver, benazepril is converted into its active form benazeprilat, a nonsulfhydryl ACE inhibitor. Benazepril is indicated in the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension. It may be used alone or in association with thiazide diuretics, or calcium channel blockers.
