Beta-carotene is an essential nutrient found in fruits and vegetables, dietary supplements and multivitamins, and is a source of approximately 50% of vitamin A in the diet. It is used to decrease symptoms of asthma, to prevent cancer, heart disease, cataracts, and age related macular degeneration, alcoholism, Alzhiemer’s depression, epilepsy, headache, heartburn, high blood pressure, infertility, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, schizophrenia, chronic lung conditions, HIV, liver disease, mental performance, wound healing, and skin disorders. It is also used in malnourished women to reduce the chance of death and night blindness during pregnancy. It is used to reduce the risk of sunburn. The effectiveness of beta-carotene in can vary with some data suggesting that it has little or no effect on some conditions.
