Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to Betaxolol hydrochloride (CAS RN 63659-19-8). Betaxolol hydrochloride is used to treat systemic high blood pressure and high pressure in the eye. Betaxolol is a selective b1-adenergic agonist. The mechanism by which Betaxolol HCl lowers blood pressure has not been established, but may include 1) a decrease in output from the heart, 2) a central effect leading to reduced sympathetic outflow to the peripheral, 3) suppression of renin activity (renin is an enzyme, produced by the kidney, that increases blood pressure) and 4) relaxation of blood vessels.
