Bucillamine is an orally bioavailable derivative of the endogenous amino acid cysteine with two donatable thiol groups, with potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. It is an antirheumatic agent developed from tiopronin. It is mainly used in Japan and Korea for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Research done in the United States of America (USA) showed positive transplant preservation properties. Bucillamine has the potential to attenuate or prevent damage during myocardial infarction, cardiac surgery, and organ transplantation.
