Canrenoic acid, in the potassium salt form, is used to treat primary/secondary aldosteronism, a condition accompanied by edema/low blood potassium, cirrhosis with ascites, and/or postoperative electrolyte disorder. Potassium canrenoate is a prodrug that is metabolized to canrenone in the body. Canrenone binds and blocks the activation of mineralocorticoid receptors by endogenously produced mineralocorticoids such as aldosterone.
