Capreomycin is a cyclic peptide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces capreolus and is indicated for the treatment of tuberculosis in combination with other drugs. The mechanism of action of capreomycin, an aminoglycoside, is not fully understood, but it is thought to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the 70S ribosomal unit. Capreomycin also binds to components in the bacterial cell, resulting in the production of abnormal proteins which are fatal to the bacteria.
