Caraway Extract

Caraway (Carum carvi L), also known as meadow cumin, is an herbaceous plant in the Apiaceae family. Caraway is native to western Asia and Europe but also grows in North America, Germany, Holland, Russia, Tunisia, Pakistan, Spain, and Scandinavia. Its fruits, often mistaken for seeds, have been used since ancient times for their benefits and characteristic aroma. Caraway extract is the extract from the dried seeds of Carum carvi. In northern and eastern Europe, caraway seeds are often used in rye and Irish soda breads, as well as cheese, liqueurs, cakes, and baked fruit dishes. Caraway extract is used in traditional medicine to aid digestion and to help stimulate appetite, to help relieve digestive spasms and indigestion, and to help relieve flatulent dyspepsia. Caraway has also been used traditionally as a remedy for menstrual cramps, poor appetite, bronchitis, laryngitis, and to promote milk excretion and weight loss. Caraway seeds, extracts, and oils can be found in carminative, laxative, and stomachic preparations. They have been used as a flavoring agent to mask unpleasant taste.
