Cetearyl ethylhexanoate (also known as cetyl ethylhexanoate or cetearyl octanoate) is an ester of cetyl alcohol and 2-ethylhexanoic acid. It is present in cosmetic products as a skin conditioning agent and emollient. Cetearyl ethylhexanoate is a synthetic mixture of fatty acid esters that resembles the preen gland secretion of aquatic birds. Thus, it imparts water repelling characteristics to cosmetic formulations. It is also used as an agent that improves "spreadability" and "refatting" material for dry skin condition.
