It is used in the treatment of cholera, as it destroys bacteria of the Vibrio genus and decreases diarrhea. It is effective against tetracycline-resistant Vibrio species. It is also used in eye drops or ointments to treat bacterial conjunctivitis. Chloramphenicol has also been used topically in the treatment of skin infections.
