Chloroxylenol is indicated for therapeutic use for skin and wound disinfection in cuts, bites, stings, abrasions, and for use as antiseptic hand cleaner. It is also used as a preservative in a variety of other topical formulations. As a phenol antiseptic, it is believed that chloroxylenol disrupts the bacterial cell membrane and disables bacterial cell functioning. At particularly high concentrations of chloroxylenol, the protein and nucleic acid content of targeted bacterial cells become coagulated and cease to function, leading to rapid cell death.
