Clavulanate potassium has little therapeutic activity itself. Instead, it is used in combination with other antibiotics to increase their effectiveness. Amoxicillin plus clavulanate potassium (Augmentin®) is one such combination used to treat lower respiratory tract infections, ear infections, sinus infections, skin infections and urinary tract infections and is used in veterinary medicine. Clavulanate potassium is a semi-synthetic beta-lactamase inhibitor isolated from Streptomyces. Clavulanate potassium contains a beta-lactam ring and binds strongly to betalactamase at or near its active site. This protects other beta-lactam antibiotics from betalactamase catalysis.
