Clioquinol is a halogenated hydroxyquinoline, anti-amebic agent indicated topically for the treatment of skin infections and orally for the treatment of intestinal amoebiasis. Clioquinol has been investigated for its action as a chelator of copper and zinc in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Clioquinol exerts bacteriostatic rather than bactericidal action. However, the precise mechanism of action is not known. It is suggested that clioquinol acts as a metal chelator and has been characterized as having neuroprotection and neurogenerative benefits.
