Clotrimazole is indicated for the treatment of susceptible infections including candidal vulvovaginitis, topical candidiasis, oropharyngeal candidiasis, prevention of oropharyngeal candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor, tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis. Clotrimazole may stop the growth of fungi or kill fungi, depending on concentration. Clotrimazole inhibits biosynthesis of ergosterol or other sterols, damaging the fungal cell wall membrane and altering its permeability. As a result of alteration of permeability, the cell membrane is unable to function as a selective barrier, and potassium and other cellular constituents are lost.
