Coal tar is a complex mixture of organic hydrocarbons obtained from the distillation of various organic fuels. Coal tar is a by-product of the destructive distillation of coal. Coal tars are usually viscous liquids or semisolids, black or almost black in color, with a characteristic, naphthalene-like odor. Over 400 compounds have been identified in coal tars. Coal tar has been indicated for local relief of itching, dryness, and irritation caused by psoriasis, seborrhea, and eczema.
