Cyanocobalamin is a man-made form of vitamin B12, and is indicated for the treatment of pernicious anemia and other vitamin B12 related deficiencies which may be caused by insufficient oral intake, malabsorption of vitamin B12 from the intestine due various factors including parasites, cancer, and bacteria. Cyanocobalamin is converted to the active forms of vitamin B12, methylcobalamin and 5-deoxyadneosylcobalamin. These active forms are required for the production of red cells, proper, neurologic function and DNA synthesis. In the case of vitamin B12 deficiency, added cyanocobalamin helps restore active forms of vitamin B12 to appropriate levels in the body.
