Deoxycholic acid, also known as ATX-101, is a bile acid which emulsifies and solubilizes dietary fats in the intestine, and when injected subcutaneously (SC) it disrupts cell membranes in adipocytes and destroys fat cells in that tissue. It is indicated for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults. It is also used as an emulsifying agent in food.
