Dextromethorphan hydrobromide and dextromethorphan polistirex (extended release formulation) is an over the counter drug indicated for use as a cough suppressant that temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation that often occurs due to common cold. Dextromethorphan shows high affinity binding to several regions of the brain, including the medullary cough center and is the d-isomer of the codeine analog of levorphanol. This compound is an NMDA receptor antagonist and acts as a non-competitive channel blocker. It is one of the most widely used antitussives and is also used to study the involvement of glutamate receptors in neurotoxicity. It is a synthetic morphine derivative that, in contrast to its levorotatory isomer, has no significant analgesic, respiratory depressant or physical dependency properties at recommended doses.
Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.
OEL Fastrac monographs are a cost-effective and convenient way to meet the requirements for PDEs (ADEs) contained in the EMA Guideline on setting health based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities (EMA/CHMP/CVMP/SWP/169430/2012), and to obtain the following information:
