Diazoxide is a benzothiadiazine derivative used for hypertensive emergencies and for the management of symptomatic hypoglycemia/hyperinsulinemia in adults caused by inoperable islet cell adenoma or carcinoma, or extrapancreatic malignancy. It is used to treat hyperinsulinemia in children and infants caused by leucine sensitivity, islet cell hyperplasia, nesidioblastosis, extrapancreatic malignancy, islet cell adenoma, or adenomatosis. When given orally, diazoxide produces a prompt dose-related increase in blood glucose level, due primarily to an inhibition of insulin release from the pancreas and also to an extrapancreatic effect.
