Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), also known as N-N-dimethyltryptamine, is N-methylated indoleamine derivative, a serotonergic hallucinogen found in a wide variety of plants and is an endogenous compound in animals, including human beings. Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a small, substituted tryptamine with psychedelic effects under investigation for treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is used as a recreational psychedelic drug and is prepared by various cultures for ritual purposes as an entheogen. It is the main psychoactive constituent of ayahuasca, a ritualistic hallucinogenic beverage (mixture of decoction of two plants Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis), used by some South American syncretic churches, with the large churches being the Santo Daime and the União do Vegetal (UDV). Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is placed in Schedule I of the United States (US) Controlled Substances Act (CSA) by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
