Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to doxazosin mesylate (CAS RN 77883-43-3) and also includes the pediatric ADE. Doxazosin is used benign prostate growth and high blood pressure. Doxazosin, a quinazoline compound, selectively inhibits the alpha(1)-subtype of alpha adrenergic receptors, and it binds highly to alpha(1A) adrenoceptor and to the subtype predominant in the prostate gland, alpha(1C) adrenoceptor. Blockade of the alpha(1) adrenoceptor decreases smooth muscle tone in the prostate and bladder. It also has antagonistic effects on phenylephrine (alpha (1) agonist)-induced contractions.
