Doxifluridine appears to be effective against several forms of cancer including cancer of the breast and colon. Doxifluridine is a prodrug that is converted to the active metabolite 5’-fluorouracil in the body and is designed to circumvent rapid degradation of 5-fluorouracil in the intestinal wall. 5-Fluorouracil interferes with DNA synthesis by blocking the thymidylate synthetase conversion of deoxyuridylic acid to thymidylic acid.
