Durapatite, also known as hydroxyapatite, hydroxylapatite and calcium phosphate tribasic, is the major mineral component of bones and teeth and it has been therapeutically used as a prosthetic aid and as a calcium supplement in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Hydroxyapatite is also used in cosmetics. It is added to cornstarch-based baby powders and acts as an emollient to “help moisturize and soften the skin”. Its synthetic form nanohydroxyapatite, is used in different commercial oral care products treatment, such as toothpastes and mouthwashes to treat dental sensitivity and to promote enamel remineralisation.
