Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to edetate disodium anhydrous (CAS RN 139-33-3). Edetate disodium is indicated for the treatment of digitalis toxicity and high blood calcium. Edetate disodium forms chelates with cations of calcium and other divalent and trivalent metals. Because of this affinity, the drug will produce a lowering of serum calcium levels during IV infusion. Edetate disodium also exerts a negative inotropic effect on the heart.
