Eflornithine hydrochloride is approved for reduction of unwanted facial hair (2). It has also been used for years as a treatment for trypanosomiasis. Eflornithine inhibits ornithine decarboxylase and the synthesis of polyamines which may be necessary for hair growth. Animal data indicate that inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase inhibits cell division and synthetic function which may affect hair growth. Trypanosomes may be more susceptible to eflornithine than mammals because of their slow turnover of ornithine decarboxylase.
