Entacapone is indicated for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease as an adjunct to levodopa and carbidopa therapy. The mechanism of action of entacapone is believed to be through its ability to inhibit catechol-O-methyltransferase and alter the plasma pharmacokinetics of levodopa (2). When administered with levodopa and carbidopa, levodopa plasma levels are greater and more sustained. It is believed that at a given frequency of levodopa administration, these more sustained plasma levels of levodopa result in more constant dopaminergic stimulation in the brain, leading to greater effects on the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.
OEL Fastrac monographs are a cost-effective and convenient way to meet the requirements for PDEs (ADEs) contained in the EMA Guideline on setting health based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities (EMA/CHMP/CVMP/SWP/169430/2012), as well as PIC/S and ANVISA requirements, and to obtain the following information:
