Estradiol valerate is a long-acting estrogen in sterile oil solutions for intramuscular use. It is indicated for multiple conditions of menopause, prostate cancer, and decreased estrogen levels due to ovarian failure. Estrogens are important for developing and maintaining the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. Estrogens bind to nuclear receptors in estrogenresponsive tissues. Estrogens modulate the pituitary secretion of the gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone through a negative feedback mechanism. Estrogens reduce the elevated levels of these hormones in postmenopausal women.
