Etomidate is a hypnotic used to aid the induction of general anesthesia. Etomidate appears to produce hypnosis, amnesia, and inhibition of feeling of pain responses almost exclusively via actions at one class of neuronal ion channels, γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors. Molecular targets mediating adrenal steroid inhibition and pain on injection have also been identified.
