Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole that presents a wide spectrum anthelmintic effect. It is used in animals for treatment of a number of gastrointestinal parasites including giardia, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, the Taenia genus of tapeworms, pinworms, aelurostrongylus, paragonimiasis, strongyles, and Strongyloides. Fenbendazole is approved to be administered under veterinary to sheep, cattle, horses, fish, dogs, cats, rabbits and seals. Fenbendazole and oxfendazole are benzimidazoles and are metabolically interconvertible in vivo. Febantel is a prodrug that can be converted in vivo by cyclization to fenbendazole or after oxidation at the sulfur atom and subsequent cyclization to oxfendazole.
