Iron, which is provided through ferrous succinate, is a mineral that is naturally present in many foods, is added to some food products, and is available as a dietary supplement. Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, an erythrocyte (red blood cell) protein that transfers oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. Most of the 3 to 4 g of elemental iron in adults is found in hemoglobin. Iron is indicated for nutritional supplementation, also for treating dietary shortage or imbalance.
