Gestodene is a synthetic progestogen hormonal contraceptive that is used in combination with ethinyl estradiol for oral contraception. Gestodene is also used in menopausal hormone therapy. Gestodene is a progestogen structurally related to levonorgestrel. Gestodene is reported to have few androgenic effects and to have less adverse effects on the serum lipid profile than older 19-nortestosterone derivatives. However, there is some evidence that gestodenecontaining combined oral contraceptives (OCs) are associated with a small increased risk of venous thromboembolism.
