Glucose

Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to Glucose monohydrate (CAS RN 5996-10-1). Glucose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide). Its aldohexose stereoisomer, dextrose (or Dglucose), is the most commonly occurring isomer of glucose in nature and is used therapeutically as a carbohydrate supplementation in case of nutrient deprivation and metabolic disorders such as hypoglycemia. L-glucose is a synthesized enantiomer that is used as a low-calorie sweetener and laxative. The unspecified form of glucose is commonly supplied as an injection for nutritional supplementation or metabolic disorders where glucose levels are improperly regulated. Glucose is listed on the World Health Organization's (WHO) List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system. Glucose is given orally in the glucose tolerance test as a diagnostic aid for diabetes mellitus.

Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.

  • The numerical OEL and control band assignment needed to determine the level of required engineering controls and personal protective equipment
  • A listing of all cited references utilized in the derivation of the OEL and ADE
  • An expert review and discussion with respect to the critical endpoints of concern, the rationale for the choice of endpoints, and dose that is to be used in the derivation of the ADE (PDE), as required by the EMA's Guideline on setting health-based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities
