Glycerol, also known as glycerin and glycerine, is a trihydroxyalcohol, a triol with a structure of propane substituted at positions 1, 2, and 3 by hydroxy groups. Glycerol has a role as an osmolyte, detergent, human metabolite, solvent, emollient, pharmaceutical agent, and sweetening agent. It is reported to function in cosmetics as a denaturant, fragrance ingredient, hair conditioning agent, humectant, oral care agent, oral health care drug, skin protectant, skin-conditioning agent (humectant), and viscositydecreasing agent.
