Hydrogen peroxide is indicated for use as an antiseptic, disinfectant, deodorant, and sterilizer. It is also used as a bleaching agent in foods, textiles, and personal care items and in the manufacture of many chemicals and chemical products. Hydrogen peroxide is an endogenous by-product of oxidative metabolism in mammalian cells, which is transformed into water and oxygen. The production of free hydroxyl radicals in the Fenton reaction is thought to be the basis of biocidal actions of hydrogen peroxide. Free radicals eventually lead to oxidative damage of proteins and membrane lipids in vivo.
