Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, also known as hypromellose, is a pharmaceutical aid and excipient indicated for use as an eye lubricant to treat dry, irritated eyes. Hypromellose ophthalmic is also used during eye surgeries to help maintain the shape of the eye and to protect the tissues of the eye from injury. It is used as a thickening agent, coating polymer, bioadhesive, solubility enhancer, and binder in the process of granulation and in modified release tablet formulations. Hypromellose is also used as a food additive.
