Ichthammol has been used in dermatology for a variety of skin conditions, most notably psoriasis and eczematous dermatitis. It has also been employed in the therapy of leg ulcers, seborrheic dermatitis, and furuncles. Pale sulfonated shale oil (PSSO) is preferred for the treatment of superficial inflammatory skin diseases. Currently, it is only approved by the FDA for veterinary use. Sulfonated shale oil (SSO), also known as ichthammol, modulates inflammatory responses by impeding inflammatory cell function. This occurs through dose dependent inhibition of leukotriene B4 (LTB4) induced Ca2+ mobilization and hydrogen peroxide generation, with diminished superoxide anion production.
