Inositol is a collection of different stereoisomers, but the term is usually used as a synonym of the most common type of inositol, myo-inositol. It is an isomer of glucose that appears to be involved physiologically in lipid metabolism and has its use being investigated in disorders associated with fat and metabolism. Inositol occurs naturally in all organisms, including humans, and is an important component in all human cells.
