Iodide

Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to iodine radical (CAS RN 14362-44-8), potassium Iodide (CAS RN 7681-11-0) and sodium iodide (CAS RN 7681-82-5). Iodine is a naturally occurring element found in sea water and in certain rocks and sediments. Iodine takes on various forms in nature. In the oceans, seaweed, algae, and the seawater itself are rich with iodine as inorganic salts (such as sodium and potassium iodides), inorganic diatomic iodine (molecular iodine), and organic monoatomic iodine. Iodine in soil tends to be in the form of inorganic salts (such as sodium iodate). There are nonradioactive and radioactive forms of iodine. Radioactive iodine is not the focus of this monograph. Iodine is used as a disinfectant for cleaning surfaces and storage containers and is used in skin soaps and bandages. Most radioactive iodine is manmade. Iodine is also active against fungi, viruses, protozoa, cysts, and spores.

Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.

  • The numerical OEL and control band assignment needed to determine the level of required engineering controls and personal protective equipment
  • A listing of all cited references utilized in the derivation of the OEL and ADE
  • An expert review and discussion with respect to the critical endpoints of concern, the rationale for the choice of endpoints, and dose that is to be used in the derivation of the ADE (PDE), as required by the EMA's Guideline on setting health-based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities
