Due to its antimicrobial properties following topical administration, minimal levels of iodoform may be found in disinfectants and it is more primarily used for veterinary purposes. Iodoform has also been found in dental paste and root canal filling materials in combination with other intracanal medications due to its radiopacity. Iodoform has also been commonly used as a healing and antiseptic dressing or powder for wounds and sores, however such clinical use to this date is limited. While the mechanism of action of iodoform remains unclear, it is proposed that iodoform releases iodine, which denatures bacterial proteins by oxidation of the free iodine. Iodoform may also play a role in chemical debridement for effective necrotic wound healing and tissue damage repair via collagen fibrinolysis. Upon treatment in necrotic tissue, iodoform reduced the size of the macromolecules containing collagen I in wound surface proteins.
Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.
OEL Fastrac monographs are a cost-effective and convenient way to meet the requirements for PDEs (ADEs) contained in the EMA Guideline on setting health based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities (EMA/CHMP/CVMP/SWP/169430/2012), as well as PIC/S and ANVISA requirements, and to obtain the following information:
